主人公简·爱是一个孤儿，跟着她的舅妈一起生活，偏偏舅妈不喜欢她，表哥表姐们更是排挤他、欺负她。后来被送到了洛伍德—-一个慈善机构。长大成人后成为了一名家庭教师，与庄园主罗切斯特先生相爱，经历了重重困难，两人终于走到了一起。
简·爱是独立的、坚强的，无论遇到什么样的困难，都会迎难而上，坚持自己的原则，在她知道罗切斯特有一个疯子妻子时，她那样舍不得离开自己深深爱着的人，还是选择了离开。由于自己的疏忽把行李丢了，真是身无分文，无亲无友，即使这样，依然保持着自己的自尊。自己在雨中淋了两天两夜，眼看生命都要终结了，来到荒原庄希望得到帮助时，也还是那样的理智，越是在困难时，越能显示出一个人的品格。
